When Tweed ‘Attacks’!!
For some ‘unknown’ reason a ‘long forgotten’ fragrance popped into my mind whilst out shopping…it was Tweed perfume by Lentheric, I remember my mum having some & I used to spray a sneaky squirt from her dresser…(of course she would of known..the fragrance is very strong, very unmistakable, very might I say ‘Tweed‘ & for me – very 1970’s) so with this in mind I just had to get some. Well Tweed is still made, in fact it goes way back to the 1930’s so not exactly a new kid on the block…but I didn’t want the ‘new’ ‘redux’ version…no no no! I wanted the original one! No ‘imitation model’ for me (well even if the smell is the same the packaging isn’t, but looking this up apparently the smell isn’t either..) finally I managed to track down a vintage bottle on eBay & made a successful bid for under a fiver! A pretty good result as its £9.99 in Boots! Excitedly I waited for my parcel to arrive & I was not disappointed, here was the original, the ‘real McCoy’ as it were, plus it came with a handy dark green ‘woody’ Tweed embossed draw string bag, a very nifty & satisfying item I must say…
My vintage Tweed – The ‘Finishing Touch’
So how did this ‘now remembered item’ stand up to the ‘spray & sniff’ test? Whoa.. it is strong! In fact I found it rather ‘over powering’ on the first squirt… there is a pleasant ‘flowery’ note though I am not sure what that it is yet.. otherwise it has that kind of ‘pong’ that I know is going to give me a headache immediately…it also has a ‘powdery’ smell too & it certainly takes me back to those old adverts with ladies ‘floating around in soft focus’ going on with their daily tasks, but made so much better & a lot more exciting because ‘she is wearing Tweed by Lentheric‘ & it was the way Lentheric was emphasised in a very ‘French’ & ‘romantic’ sense, it was alluring, mysterious, yet ‘practical & supportive’ you too could enter this world by just buying Tweed, & then you would become part of this ‘exclusive’ club…
The very ‘nifty’ Tweed embossed draw-string bag – great!
Interestingly when I searched online, I could not find any 1970’s TV adverts so I am posting here the early 80’s one where the tag line ends ‘Tweed the finishing touch’ well that’s certainly true in a sense, as the first spray for over 30 years nearly ‘finished me off...’no only joking! Since I wasn’t sure what that ‘flowery scent’ was I have researched & found that Tweed has “top notes of bergamot, cinnamon & geranium. Middle notes of ylang-ylang, Jasmine, Lavender & orange flower. Dry down notes of oakmoss, patchouli, sandalwood, benzoin, vanilla & vetiver” Wow! That’s packing a hell of a lot in! and that ‘Tweed is a sensuous woody (yes agree with that) floral (also totally agree) fragrance with an emphasis on a dark, captivating earthy-woody mystique, (hope so as it sounds fascinating) the floral notes add an intoxicating (well why not?) feminine touch” whoa…now ‘my head is spinning’ with all this info, when was it was just ‘very nice actually’ to take a walk ‘down memory lane’ & rediscover this scent from my childhood, & reengage in this experience of how a ‘sniff of a scent can take you back decades’ whether you want to or not…
