A ‘Victorian’ vision…at the Charity Shop
Was it just me..? That was struck by the very ‘Victorian’ appearance of a Charity Shop mannequin on a recent excursion out of my local area. Straightaway I noticed a number of things…the dark heavy dress with layering folds, the ‘unearthly’ yellow skin and the vacant face…it was kind of creepy…yet fascinating too. So I prepared to ‘snap away’ and get my shots (though I had to wait a little while due to a small girl ‘playing’ with the mannequin, it seems something ‘struck’ her too…?). The wig is certainly not ‘Victorian’ and only ‘prostitutes’ and ‘streetwalkers’ (plus maybe actresses?) would have worn their hair loose at the time. ‘Ladies’ wore their hair neatly chignoned, or tied back, not ‘loose’ and free! But what or ‘who’ is she waiting for? To me she looks like a woman ‘waiting in the shadows’, almost like an extra in a Hammer film (I feel…images from those films are imprinted on my mind..) either way…it was a treat to see something so ‘filmic’ in an ordinary and everyday setting that most people just pass on by…
