My hands are…’Golden’…
A magazine obsession of mine is ‘Golden Hands‘ a publication by Marshall Cavendish from the early to mid 1970’s, I first discovered this ‘marvel’ quite by accident in the 1990’s whilst perusing in one of my local charity shops & I can tell you I knew I had found a real gem! Of course I couldn’t stop there, I went on to collect the whole series bit by bit often appearing quite by chance all from various charity & second hand shops, it wasn’t ‘planned’ it just kind of ‘happened’…but what did they contain? Well the focus was on creating your own clothes, interior decoration, accessories, toys, you name it as long as you can either sew, knit, crochet, embroider, machine stitch or macramé it, it was in Golden hands, published weekly just to keep you super busy! & it was ‘international’ selling in Australia, Canada & South Africa…so just to introduce this ‘Fashion Sensation‘, this issue features a ‘trendy’ trouser suit to sew, a rather fetching number in mustard with burgundy brown accessories & I have to say there is ‘no nonsense‘ in this outfit! I’ve selected a few from other issues, outfit no.2 is a beige A-line dress with a matching buckle detail belt, a very ‘groovy‘ snake print scarf (have to say would look ‘bang on trend’ now…) a wide brimmed hat, cream patterned tights & finished off with leather square heeled shoes, certainly no ‘nonsense’ in this look either. Outfit no.3 is again that mustard colour (v popular at the time…) in the form of ‘razor’ sharp pleated trouser’s (wow you could probably cut someone with them!…) cream blouse & shoes, brown buckle belt & polka dot neck scarf topped with glasses & I must say I do like the table & chair (though not to sure about the plant..)
& the last look (again mustard & brown – must of been ‘de rigueur‘ in 1972) is a look that wouldn’t look out of place on the Tommy Hilfiger’s S/S 15 runway show with this suede dress, floppy hat, slouchy shoulder bag, burgundy jumper & matching tights. Although the exact details are not the same, that carefree laid back style certainly is...finally a few fashion ideas..
Firstly I offer a more ‘season appropriate’ outfit with this b&w sleeveless knitted crop top & skirt (& yep you’ve guessed it b&w is ‘trending’ right now) to wear for a ‘cool’ day on the beach (though personally – I think I will give this look a miss…). Secondly check out this Golden Hands offer – a choice of 2 polka dots outfits for a mere £2.60!! Very smart & chic – ‘perfect for garden parties’! (wonder if they did a matching bag as well??..hmm..)
now finally a fashion prediction, see below – may I introduce the ‘flouncy’ sleeve, not been seen for years so I feel a ‘comeback is well overdue‘ I wonder if I’m right? & do I have the ‘golden‘ touch with this fashion forecast?? Only time will tell!!
