What the ‘Unicorn’ is going on…??
In search of Unicorns…? Well you won’t have to look far it seems…on a recent ‘sojourn’ down my local high street I had no trouble at all finding these ‘rare’, ‘elusive’ yet Magical Creatures. I started my search, as I wanted to explore what is the ‘deal’ about Unicorns at the minute? They are not just sticking images of them on little girls bags and flourishing them with pink rainbows and glitter…(well actually they are…but there is more to this phenomena).
I was enticed into looking into this as over the last 6 months or so when reading through my regular fashion magazines I noticed the usage of the word Unicorn time and again, but not in relation to the said Magical Creatures themselves. So what is going on?
It seems…I’ve missed the ‘ride’ on the ‘Unicorn boat’ and I’m not totally ‘getting’ the point of something that is ‘special’, sought-after, ‘heavenly’ and uplifting and it appears to be replacing the fashion ‘Holy Grail’ (who’d thought of that..). On doing some reading up on this, various thinkers have surmised that in a world of unsafety and insecurity Unicorns offer the opposite upliftment and comfort.
Yet Unicorns were not always thought of so ‘approachable’ and in times past there was known they were known as ferocious creatures that ‘preyed on Virgins’, also as fierce protectors (think of the Lion and the Unicorn symbol). So at least the idea of protection has lasted…it is believed that the Victorians added to the more ‘availability & acceptability’ of the elusive Unicorn. In fact when I was small, I really really wanted Unicorns to exist…please please, I thought and I may have certainly been first in line for a Unicorn bag, bedspread and slippers.
Though the biggest market for Unicorn items at the moment is reported to be young millennial females and being a postmillennial female…I therefore seem to have been ‘passed by’ but no what’s this?
A Barclaycard ad with a Unicorn on it…obviously advertisers are really not missing their ‘Unicorn’ opportunity…at least…I ‘know’ what these writers, advertisers and marketers are on about..(well sort of) and to quote a fashion retailer site I came across recently, ‘no Unicorns were harmed in the process of making our products’ well they may claim that but we’ll see….
